Rome, Ga.
—
Annalysa Cagasan, a Piano Performance and Pedagogy major at Shorter University,
has been selected to receive the Floride Smith Dean Piano Scholarship from the
Georgia Federation of Music Clubs.

This
prestigious $2,000 award is a part of a state-wide competition. Cagasan is the
third Shorter University piano student to receive this award within the past
seven years.

As
winner of this year’s scholarship, Annalysa will perform at the GFMC’s annual
conference on Saturday, Oct. 17, 2020, at Piano Works in Duluth.

“I’m
ecstatic that Annalysa won the Floride Smith Dean Scholarship,” said Dr. Jerico
Vasquez, artist-in-residence, professor of music, and coordinator of keyboard
studies at Shorter. “This award affirms her commitment to excellence and hard
work as a musician, and she also exemplifies the prestige of the piano program
at Shorter University.”

Cagasan, who is from Carrollton, Ga., added, “Being a student at Shorter has been a huge blessing. The professors are committed to investing in their students. When I have a question, my professors are always more than willing to help. The godly example that they have set has influenced me as well. They encourage me to strive for excellence, not only in my major, but also in my walk with Christ. I’m so thankful God allowed me to attend Shorter this year!”

Founded in 1873, Shorter University is a Christ-centered, four-year liberal arts university committed to excellence in education. U.S. News & World Report and The Princeton Review annually include Shorter on their lists of best Southeastern Colleges. The university offers traditional bachelor’s degrees in 40 areas of study, online courses and degree programs, undergraduate programs for working adults, associate’s, and master’s programs.

Scholarships are one of the most tangible ways we can help our students move #ForwardWithHope. The more than 98% of our students who receive financial aid are 100% grateful for the support of donors.

On May 5, Shorter University will participate in the global day of unity and giving, #GivingTuesdayNow, to raise scholarship funds for students like Kaitlyn Fudge, a Psychology major from Acworth, Georgia.

Kaitlyn is a member of Shorter Band, Delight Ministries, and Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. She’s excited to be heading to graduate school at Georgia State University to pursue a Master’s in Social Work.

“It’s about being there for each other through the good times and the bad and in the middle of the storm, lifting each other up through sharing the Word of Jesus,” she said. “Mainly, Shorter has taught me over and over again not to worry —God has this.”

We are proud of the way our Shorter family puts our mission of Transforming Lives through Christ into action. Will you join us in moving our Shorter family forward by supporting student scholarships? All gifts add up to have a huge impact on our campus, our community and our world.

“The staff of the literary magazine is made up of students at the freshman and senior levels, English as well Science majors,” said Chimes advisor Dr. Fabrice Poussin. “They are all dedicated to the magazine and to making it the best it can be. Through the process of selection, conception and printing, as well as that of organizing the release evening, all these students give it their whole heart and it shows.
